Show #361 Airing Sunday, 10/29/06
Those home-cooked meals like grandma used to fix are just memories for most of us. But now you can savor these memorable treats right in your own home thanks to a new cookbook created by the well-seasoned seniors from Slavic Village. Joining us in the hot seat is Alisa McBride, coordinator for the Slavic Village Senior Resource Program, and Ann Greczanik, a culinary contributor to their new cookbook.
Question: Before we cook up a storm, can you tell us a little bit about the Slavic Village Senior Resource Program?
Answer: The Program was founded in March of 2005 and is backed by a grant from the MacGregor Foundation. Our mission is to connect seniors in the Slavic Village and the Broadway area with services and with the community so that they can live independently as long as possible.
We plan educational programs, social programs, and trips, and also provide outreach and referrals. For example, if someone needs meals on wheels, or is looking for transportation, they can call me and we can help them connect to the appropriate agency.
Question: Why create a cookbook?
Answer: Seniors have such a great wealth of information, and we were looking for a project that would share that wealth with the community. So many traditional recipes are cooked by seniors in this area, and we wanted to capture them down. We have about 15 contributors and close to 150 recipes in the cookbook.
In addition to recipes, a resource guide of helpful agencies is included in the book. These agencies were picked by the seniors themselves-they have used them and have found them to be helpful.
Question: Ann, you're one of the contributors to the cookbook, and you're going to make one of your recipes. What do you have with us today?
Answer: Today we’ll be doing my grandmother’s recipe for borscht (summer beet soup - click here for recipe)

Question: Delicious! How can we get the cookbook?
Answer: You can call the number that's coming next to order one. The cost is $10, and all proceeds go directly back into the Slavic Village Senior Resource Program, to help us offer educational and social programs, and to help us pay for trips. For example, we will be taking seniors on a trip to the Amish area. They will only pay a small fee, and we will back the rest, in part with help from the proceeds of this book.
Cleveland seniors can still cook up a storm, and now you can join them. To get the Slavic Village cookbook, call Alisa at the number that's next. And dial fast-the first two callers will get a free copy!
