Show #322 Airing 12/11/05
You think it’s hard picking out gifts for a loved one? It can be especially difficult figuring out what to give to someone who’s grieving a recent loss. How can you celebrate the holidays without seeming insensitive? Jim Busch, co-owner of Busch Funeral and Crematory Services, is frequently asked about this December Dilemma, and he has some thoughtful advice.
Question: Expressing holiday wishes to a loved one who has experienced a loss in the past year is difficult. How should we approach this issue?
Answer: Holidays are especially difficult because they are times of great sentiment, reliving memories, and are based on relationships we share with others.
Question: Don't you find that lots of people are afraid that you'll upset the person by acknowledging the deceased?
Answer: Yes, but the opposite is really true. It’s more upsetting to think a loved one is already forgotten and everyone has already moved on.
Question: Can you give us some examples gifts might honor the deceased?
Answer: I’ve brought some ideas with me today.
- Here are angel tree ornaments that can be personalized with the deceased’s name as a remembrance.
- Memorial candles—5 different themes and they can be personalized as well. (We can personalize these items on the same day as the purchase).
- Metal or wood personalized cemetery cross.
- Cemetery wreath which can be delivered to any local cemetery gravesite.
- Personalized flag cases for veterans.
- Stepping stones
- All are available at our Remembrance Center .
Question: What other actions can we take to help a grieving friend or family member cope with this difficult season?
Answer: Giving of your time and yourself can help a grieving friend cope. Call them. Listen to them. Making time can be a wonderful gift this season.
There are thoughtful ways you can celebrate the holidays and still recognize the absence of a loved one. To learn more, give Busch Funeral and Crematory Services a call. My thanks to Jim Busch.
