Show #480 airing Sunday, 5/24/09
There are only 5% of hospitals in the world who are able to achieve the distinction of being a Magnet hospital – and we’re “positive” Fairview is one of them! But what makes a Magnet hospital so “attract”-ive? Kristine Adams can tell us! Kristine is in the Nursing Research/Center for Excellence at Fairview.
Question: What does it mean to be a "Magnet" Hospital?
Answer: The award of “Magnet” hospital is an award for having achieved excellence in nursing care. And it’s called a “Magnet” award because that means the hospital attracts the best. We are the first of any regional hospital in the area to achieve this – and the only other hospital in our area that is a Magnet hospital is the Cleveland Clinic, with which we are affiliated.
Question: What kids of things did you have to do to earn this award?
Answer: There are numerous areas of data that needed to be provided, including:
- Management and leadership
- Research and innovation
- Specialization of nurses
- And excellent patient outcomes and nursing care.
Question: What does all this mean to patients?
Answer: For example, when we talk about excellent patient outcomes, we’re talking about:
- Low infection rates
- Low number of pressure ulcers
- Low number of falls
- And high patient satisfaction.
By recognizing quality patient care, nursing excellence, and innovations in professional nursing practice, the Magnet Recognition Program provides consumers with the ultimate benchmark to measure the quality of care that they can expect to receive
In plain language, this means if you have to be in the hospital, you want to be in a Magnet hospital.
We have outstanding nurses.
It’s the best place to go for nursing care.
And, while no one wants to be in a hospital, our patients are very happy and satisfied with their experience at Fairview.
Question: When we walk into a hospital, how can we tell if its a magnet hospital?
Answer: The award is posted – and, at Fairview, we have lots of signage to share the information with patients and their friends and families.
Also, all of the RN nurses have been awarded pins that they wear identifying that they have achieved this high nursing award.
Being a Magnet Hospital “attracts” a lot of well-deserved attention! Congratulations to Fairview! It’s great to have a “positive force” in the health care field! And to find out more, give them a call! My thanks to Kristine Adams.
