Planning a Dental Makeover
Show #380 Airing Sunday, 3/25/07

Spring’s the time to fix up our yards, our homes, and our wardrobes. So why not spruce up your smile too? Here to explain is a dentist for all seasons, Dr. Steven Marsh.

Question: If a viewer decides to spring into action for a smile makeover, maybe because a child or grnadchild's having a summer wedding or graduation, can they get the job done in time?

Answer: Yes, if they start their planning soon. If they plan in advance, they can avoid delays and interruptions once the work starts. It’s like building a home. If you plan the details in advance, the actual building can go faster and smoother. Last time I visited GO, we looked at a patient who was a caregiver and didn’t have lots of time to improve her smile.

Before/After Nancy.

With planning, we are able to do dental makeovers in 2-3 appointments.
After that segment, we received phone calls with people asking, how can the work be done so quickly? It’s because a lot of planning goes into the makeover.

Question: What if someone comes into your office with something simple, like a chipped tooth?

Answer: We take photos of their mouth with our digital camera. The photos are then uploaded to our imager. With the imager, I can hand-draw on the photo to give the patient an idea of what their completed work will look life.
Example of a patient who had spaces between their teeth, fixed by simple bonding. Before bonding and Before/Imaged bonding.

Question: What about a slightly more difficult makeover?

Answer: We can send the photo to a service called SmileVision. The company takes the picture, and sends back a photo that shows what can be done through veneers and crowns.

Example of patient.

The bottom teeth were simply reshaped, and there are four veneers on top.

Before veneers; Before/Imaged veneers; Before/After veneers

Question: What planning goes into a very complicated case-an extreme makeover?

Answer: If a lot of work must be done, we can make an impression of the teeth to create a model. The model can then be sent away and a wax-up can be formed.

Example: Similar example of an extreme case. Before Extreme; Before/After Extreme
